    Dash Cam


    Dash Cam is brand a new feature in our Aviva Drive app for iOS and Android that puts an independent witness on every car's dashboard for the first time and records a clip if they have an accident. Drivers can still also save up to 28% on their care insurance if display safe driving over 200 miles.

    What customer problems did you set out to solve?

    Aviva receives almost 300k motor claims a year, and in 20% of cases those involved disagree about who was responsible. These are often hard to resolve because we only have anecdotal accounts to base our decision on. Without independent evidence, these claims take over 100 days to settle which creates frustration for the customer and results in combined bodily injury and credit hire costs of over £40m a year.

    We surveyed over 2.1k Aviva customers and found that they wanted to feel more protected against perils on the road outside their control. 30% said they intended to use a Dash Cam in the future, and of those 80% this year.

    What differentiates your proposition from other offerings in the market?

    Rather than recording the whole journey, Aviva Drive's Dash Cam uses automatic collision detection. Powered by sensory data such as the g-force and accelerometer reading from the smartphone, Dash Cam only records 30 seconds before and 30 seconds after the collision, ensuring the user has all the footage needed to prove what happened while also saving battery life and storage space. Dash Cam also uses smart compression to create a video clip no larger than 30MB - the same as an album's worth of music. This makes sending footage to claims via email attachment really simple, and works with a phone already full of music, apps and photos. Unlike other Dash Cams, Aviva Drive's is fully integrated in to our claims process for seamless submission.

    What impact has the proposition had?

    • Historically claims without Dash Cam footage have an average lifecycle (from notification to settlement) of up to 200 days. This can be reduced by up to 50% with Dash Cam
    • A big uplift in motor insurance quotes (up 5% since June)
    • Significant brand impact – research shows customers who have seen the campaign are 8% more likely to trust Aviva and 10% more likely to consider Aviva when buying
    • Since launching in July, we've completed over 100k Dash Cam journeys and peaked as the 18th ranked finance app on the App store
    • 1 in 4 of our active users are using the app 10+ times a week which is unprecedented engagement for an insurer, and our app store rating is an impressive 4.5 stars

    What’s next for your proposition?

    We’re looking to develop a proactive claims response as part of the Dash Cam product and utilise the same technology to trigger a phone call from a claims handler at the point of collision to offer medical assistance or vehicle repair – providing a differentiating claims service. We’re also in the early stages of exploring a version of Dash Cam for commercial customers and for cyclists.
